Bangkok cross river ferries are available at many piers scattered along the river in central Bangkok for crossing to the opposite bank of Chao Phraya River. Cross river ferries can be found at the majority of piers used by Chao Phraya Express Boat service as well as smaller piers used only by river crossing ferries. These river crossing ferries can be very useful if you’re planning to visit Bangkok attractions on the opposite side of Chao Phraya River such as Wat Arun.
Bangkok Ferry
Bangkok ferries are large flat boats with a roof and limited seating. However, the journey across the river is really short so standing all the way shouldn’t be a big problem to anyone.
Bangkok Ferry Fare
Bangkok ferry fare varies slightly depending on the ferry crossing used. In most cases the one way ferry fare is 3.5 Baht per person. The most popular ferry crossing between Wat Pho and Wat Arun charges a bit more - 4 Baht per person one way.
You will need to pay either before boarding the ferry or after leaving it, depending on the side you board. Usually you need to pass a rotating metal gate and a desk or booth with a person collecting money.
If you won’t see one on the way to the ferry, just jump on the boat and don’t worry as you will need to pay once you leave it. You will not get any ticket and no one will ask for it. If you paid your fare before boarding, you are free to go once the ferry touches the land.
Operating Hours
Operating hours depends on the river crossing. The busiest piers are operating every day, usually from 5-6 am to 8-9 pm.
The smaller crossings used only by cross river ferries can have different operating hours and offer their services only during the rush hour.
Bangkok Ferry Crossing
Finding major piers is easy as they are clearly marked with signs but it’s not always the case with the smaller piers that are used only for river crossing so using GPS would be recommended. Locations of the piers used for river crossing in central Bangkok can be found in the list below.
Major piers are used for Chao Phraya Express Boat services but normally they operate from different parts of the pier. For locating the part of the pier used by cross river ferries, check for the signs leading to “Ferry Crossing” or just ask locals and they will point you to the direction.
